ALTEC 879A (Santana) rebuild attempt

I want restore my beautiful (original) Santana's (Model 879A). I'm looking for the original part numbers of the biflex woofer, tweeter, and cross-over.

I've searched a few internet ALTEC sites and speaker repair parts sites - but the 879A's seem not to make the lists.

Can anyone suggest how/where I might find the original part numbers?

Can anyone suggest a source for purchasing replacement parts - especially the bi-flex woofers?

Can anyone suggest an alternative combination of available parts that would sound as good - better - than original?

If you can post more information it would be helpful. Are your speakers dead? Do both your the woofers work or not? Do the tweeters work?

The bi-flex woofer is a model 420A/Y. Cones are to my knowledge not available. These come across ebay from time to time....usually pirated from Santana's!

Charles, this is some info i have found on the Santana model 879A. tweeter=31085 (33695) no repair just replace. woofer = 420A 32371 (15") or 420A 32371 (16") or 420-8B 33343. LF cone/vc assm for 15" = 21405, for 16" and 420-8B = 23886. crossover = 33618. cabinet assm = 30879, grille assm - 33225. Hope this helps

Hello Charles,
If your 420 cones are still in good physical condition, but the voice coil is dead it is possible to fit a new voice coil to the cone.

You should check with Bill at GPA and see if he has the cones and if not the complete cone the voice coil and lower spider.

I had to do this repair to a pair of 420's that had been burnt out, but had good cones. It is a very time consuming task, and a delicate operation, but worth the time if you want to keep the 420's going.
